Development of the river Main

The river Main is an essential link between the Rhine stream section and the Danube.

The development of the river Main is aiming at a water depth of 2.90 m (actual depth 2.50 m) and a water-level width of 40 m (actual width 36 m). Until 1999 the river Main will be fully developed up to the surrounding of Würzburg. The planning is now concentrating on the section from Würzburg to Bamberg. Until 2005 this section shall be fully developed. (see graphic "Development of the river Main, date: October 1998).

Then motor vessels with a length of 110 m and a beam of 11.4 m as well as twin-barge pusher tug assemblies can pass these river sections without restrictions, because a draught of 2.70 m is guaranteed during the whole year.
